In this workweek ’s Fringe , called “ The No - Brainer , ” Olivia and the scoobies got to investigate their most cyber opponent yet : A protrude - up window that turns hoi polloi ’s mentality to goo ! pillager ahead , weirdos .
While I enjoy the arch over conspiracy plot in Fringe with the Pattern and Massive Dynamic , I think some of the best episode are devoted to what sometimes mockingly get anticipate “ monsters of the week . ” If you could come up with a hebdomadary monster that ’s cool enough , it makes for fantabulous television ( as ex - Files and Supernatural have march many clock time over ) . And this week ’s monster , a 657 - megabyte file that liquifies people ’s brains , was creepy and funny all at once .
We get down by watching an unwary teen clicking on a belt down - up windowpane that appears on his computer bearing the words “ What ’s that haphazardness ? come home here . ” I swear penetrate on a pop - up has become the “ start the door to stranger in field hockey mask ” of the 2000s . Why does the kid do it ? ? ? I think basically so that we can see the weird images and remember the movies The Ring and Videodrome with expectant satsifaction .

After the minor ’s brain is liquified by the filing cabinet , several other hoi polloi suffer the same luck . But not before Walter can revel in cup of swimming brain and Olivia can once again tangle with evil internal investigations white dude Harris . Also , my prediction last calendar week that Olivia ’s visiting sis and niece would be in danger fall lawful immediately . The third near - dupe of the malign soda pop - up was Olivia ’s niece , who hardly avoided sneeze her brains out of her olfactory organ .
Unlike most of our bad guys , this workweek ’s monster - God Almighty was n’t part of the Pattern or some other vast undercover science cabal . He was just an out - of - work hacker with a vendetta against people he cerebrate had wronged him : A boss who discharge him , an ex - married woman , and a used automobile salesman whose last was n’t ever explained ( or was it ? did I miss something ? ) . He ’s invented this multimedia file that incorporate some form of script - wavey sound ingredient that vibrate on a frequency that take brains literally fry . Which does n’t excuse why people are only bear on if they LOOK at the Indian file , since it would seem that all they ’d have to do is see it . But do n’t concern about that , because Walter is making funny jokes about Darwin and syphilis .
Olivia and the scoobies easily traverse our single file - sharing orca to his ( of course ) undercover storage warehouse lab den . This is thanks in part to yet another underground science friend of Peter ’s who enjoin things about megabytes and did n’t seem to lie with about Google map .

The pacing and gory brain stuff were terrific – this was a simple whodunnit instalment done well . Perhaps the biggest flaw here was the slimly tedious rehashing of the conflict between Olivia and Harris from last week . Harris is some DHS mucky - muck who Olivia once helped to lag for sexually lash out charwoman . Now he ’s on a vendetta against her and the whole Fringe division , which he keeps say is a “ misallocation of FBI resources ” for reasons he never really articulates . He says the division is “ varlet ” despite the fact that they always solve their cases and seem to be working within the FBI . Anyway , he spend a wad of time secern Olivia that she take up , and she had to make her frowny face while ignoring him .
Towards the terminal of the episode , Olivia ’s boss Broyles eventually steps in and say Harris that if he fights Olivia he ’s fighting Broyles – there ’s rifle to be a three - alphabetic character - bureau manager smackdown . I must fink that this whole subplot is a little boring and feels like a red herring . Harris is n’t part of the Pattern and his character is so two - dimensional that he might as well hold out in the book Flatland . Get rid of him already and give us more minatory Massive Dynamic or Jones or something .
A subplot that did actually forge in the episode was Walter face his past tense . The mother of Walter ’s former lab help get into contact with him so that she can get some closure on how her daughter expire : In a fire that start in Walter ’s honest-to-god science laboratory . Peter resists allow her see Walter , imagining that it will send the one-time mad scientist into a spin or breakdown . But Olivia convinces Peter to let Walter confront up to his pre - mad mental hospital past , and we get a pretty touching scene where Walter talks to the grieve womanhood about her daughter . Then Peter get drunk and go over to Olivia ’s house to do his smokin ’ Pacey routine and say he ’s sorry .

I ’ll wager you a dime bagful that he ’s going to wind up date Olivia ’s babe . That ’s my surmisal .
Until next week , tike , ferchrissake do n’t tap a goddamn pop up - up windowpane .
