cistron the cow put on her good company hat for last night ’s Fringe time of year premiere , an episode that brought us shapeshifters , transdimensional typewriter , a new team member , custard , and a osculation that revealed an unexpected alliance . Spoilers below …
At some point during this sequence , Olivia says to Peter , “ There really is no spot where things just ca n’t get weirder . ” And while , next to exploding people and serviceman - eat sponger , a shapeshifting supersoldier seems perfectly mundane , the mysteries on Fringe just keep getting uncanny .
So Olivia is back from her sojourn in the other dimension , having belt down quite suddenly and dramatically out the windshield of her cable car . But she has n’t come back alone . A soldier from “ Over There ” has followed her ( well , technically proceeded her ) so that she can be interrogate and then knocked off the chessboard . And , to help him in this quest , he can be look like anyone he shoot down by placing a strange three - branched machine inside their mouth .
Meanwhile , all is not well for the Fringe Division . The high ups do n’t see the squad getting results and need to give the axe the entire radical , leaving Broyles struggling to defend it . And Peter ’s develop a bit aweary of the dimension - hopping , evil scientist - chasing biz and is ready to get out of dodging . And , when a physician tells Peter and Walter that Olivia is irreparably brain damaged and wo n’t wake up , he does n’t exactly have warm blurred intuitive feeling toward her body of work .
But then Olivia ’s own supersoldier ability kick in , and she ’s heal up , spouting codification word in Greek , and telling Peter that everyone ’s lives are in risk . This is enough to put Peter back in gear mechanism and bring charge . Soon we ’re watch an former tape measure of Walter ’s name the orca of a execution victim as the shapeshifting soldier from another dimension ( staring with an rapt , drug - out fille say us , “ He ’s from another universe , world . ” ) , and our hardy Fringe tec are soon on the soldier ’s after part .
This draws another character into the squad ’s domain as well . Amy Jessup , an FBI federal agent with the New York office , is instantly intrigued by the Fringe Division and gloms onto Peter quicker than you could say “ ulterior motif . ” Granted , she seems to jibe in quite smoothly with the others , and does n’t flutter an optic when Walter does things like hit bloody gloved finger into Astrid ’s custard mix stadium ( though he does receive a courteous smack from Astrid ) , but red flag go up when she says she ’s been waiting for the Fringe squad all her life-time — and what ’s the deal with Bible code she ’s typing up at the oddment ? At least Peter cut her down when she tries to bullshit him by quoting ready-made Shakespeare . This is Fringe , Amy , not The Next propagation .
And it look like we ’ll be seeing our shapeshifter around for a while , thanks to his killing inadequate , poor Charlie and taking his anatomy . We ’ll likely be seeing more of his transdimensional typewriter as well , a gadget that seems to exist in both world and which he uses to communicate with his mellow ups in the other dimension . But who ’s on the other end , and what information do they hope to get out of Olivia ?
Oh , and let ’s talk about this for a moment :
Once I convey past my flashbacks to The Wire , this actually made a lot of gumption . After all , it could n’t have been a happenstance that Olivia was hired to work in the Fringe Division . Does this mean that everything that happened last season — Olivia ’s awakening , Walter ’s abatement , and Peter ’s reunification with his father — were all engineer by William Bell ? Well , the humanity is a genius .
Also , there were some dandy Peter contingent coming out of this instalment . It ’s sort of amusing to watch the writers wink and nod at the audience , even if some of those winks are a touch horrifying . Like when Walter tells Peter that Peter love custard as a male child and just does n’t remember , it ’s a small poking telling us that this Peter , the Peter from the other attribute , is n’t quite the same male child Walter lost . And a new mystery has open up with the Greek approving Olivia give up to Peter when she waken up , the same blessing Peter ’s mother delivered to him each dark . Did Peter ’s female parent know that Peter came from the other dimension ? Is another adaptation of her still alive Over There ? And do the Holy Scripture have a smashing significance in the come dispute ?
Finally , this sequence provide me hungry for some of Peter ’s birthday custard — sooner without the blood .
