Consumer - degree high - definition digital camcorder are starting to come out ( the first , the GR - HD1 from JVC , hit the marketplace recently ) , and Sony , Canon , JVC , and Sharp are jointly developing a common measure for the format that all manufacturing business could utilise . I suppose this should help prevent the proliferation of lots of different , competing standards for consumer HD camcorders , but is n’t there already accepted standards for high-definition television ? Why would there need to be a separate standard for consumer camcorders ?

The understanding is that high-definition television is a broadcast standard , not a transcription standard . A common transcription standard would let tapes recorded on one manufacturer ’s equipment to be played back on another ’s .
