We ’ve run into both halves of the Doctor Who time of year undoer , which protrude tomorrow on BBC America at 9 phase modulation . The skillful word ? The meter - traveling eccentric Doctor , play by Peter Capaldi , is as electrifying as ever . The bad news ? You ’ll be kind of lose if you ’re not a Who expert . Here ’s our pamperer - barren recapitulation .

Head writer Steven Moffat is once again concerned with the question of just who , and what , the Doctor is , and whether he ’s a hero . And what he means to people , and what kind of burden he has on the universe . We’vecomplained in the past tense that Moffat ’s scripts tend to be heavy on people obsessing about the Doctor , and this remain to be the case — to the point where you almost want to propose a special variant of the Bechdel Test for Moffat . ( Is there a prospect where two the great unwashed who are n’t the Doctor verbalize about something other than the Dr. ? )

Starship Test 9

It ’s not actually a despoiler to say that this open two - parter , once again , is about a curing of characters who are obsessed with the Doctor , and who drop their time trying to analyse and determine the physician . And the story turns on the choices the Doctor makes . ( And this being a two - parter , that works a lot better in part two than in part one . )

But this time around , justly out of the gate , Moffat pull from Doctor Who ’s back catalogue with more alacrity than ever before . The first episode , airing tomorrow night , is front - charge with portion of cameo and shout - outs from throughout the chronicle of Who . Tons of character just plough up , and you ’re supposed to know who they all are . I wo n’t list them all here , because they ’re spoiler — but if you ’re not a Who expert , you might want to keep a Who - savvy friend on speed telephone dial .

This being a Moffat script , there are also a mess of clever bits , cool lines of dialog , and some well - observed character number . The Doctor ’s companion Clara ( Jenna Coleman ) gets to have a teamup that ’s pretty hilarious and unpredictable , which gives her some of her estimable fabric to mold with . There ’s not really enough story for two whole episodes , but by the final stage of the 2d half , you do kind of get a payoff that make the whole thing feel worthwhile .

Lilo And Stitch 2025

All in all , the opening two - parter is middling but fun Doctor Who . Much like last yr ’s “ Deep Breath , ” it ’s not going to be anybody ’s favourite installment — but it gets the egg rolling , and “ Deep Breath ” was followed by some passably great episodes last year . ( Along with some that were n’t so outstanding . )

At the same clock time , there ’s even more of a manic glow in Peter Capaldi ’s eye than before — so there should be interesting days in front .
