While Google has n’t made a phone with a mountain pass ( at least not yet ) , the folk music over in Mountain View have been working on adding sustenance for sensor cutouts into the next edition ofAndroid . And in a recentAndroid Developers Blogpost , Google described in dandy point what it ’s doing to enhance the functionality of modern display , both with and without snick .
Some of these changes involve moving the clock from the top - right to the top - leave corner and add better testing utility to check that a phone ’s notch does n’t mess up up your apps . But perhaps the biggest takeaway is that Google is putting a punishing cap on the total act of notch Android will accommodate , saying that “ machine may only have up to one cutout on each short edge of the gimmick ” and that users should not encounter contrivance with “ multiple cutouts on a single edge ” or “ a cutout on the unexpended or ripe long sharpness of the gimmick . ”
In short , that entail that maximal number of nick you should ever feel on an Android gimmick is two , with those nick being turn up at the top and the bottom of the machine ( when regard in portrait mood ) . Now for the sort of people who ca n’t stand notches , two cutouts probably already sounds like a lot , but at least Google is putting a terminus ad quem on how much nonsensicality Android will support .

Added support for notches should also make it easier to hide those cutout too.Photo: Sam Rutherford (Gizmodo)
Currently , Google articulate there are already 16 Android gimmick from 11 unlike OEMs that sport a notch of some sort , admit phones like theOnePlus 6,Huawei P20 Pro , and theLG G7 . And with the gloam headphone discharge time of year coming up soon , those numbers will almost certainly increase between now and the end of 2018 .
However , if you ’re concerned about notches taking over the manufacture , fear not I say . Based on earpiece like theVivo Apex(which later bend into theVivo Nex S ) and theOppo Find X , it ’s clear phone makers have already found alternatives to notches when it make out to maximize screen substantial landed estate . And withflexible earpiece coming soon(ish ) from Samsung , Huawei and others , I would n’t be surprised if nick became only a minor radar target in the smartphone timeline .
