Sorry , Penguin buff — I still think the best character on Gotham is Harvey Bullock . And last nighttime ’s instalment expanded his eccentric massively , making him way more sympathetic and bewitching . But almost every persona got a massive encouragement from “ Spirit of the Goat . ” spoiler …
allow ’s just take this role by character , OK ?
Harvey Bullock
Gordon ’s slovenly , crooked partner gets his very own flashback , and a whole backstory to go with it . As seen in the magazine above , 10 years ago Bullock was a gung - ho idealistic young cop who ignored his more experient collaborator ’s advice to hang back and wait for substitute on the hunt for the Goat , a serial slayer who target the children of Gotham ’s affluent citizen . The partner , Dix , warned Bullock that Gotham is no spot for heroes — but Bullock did n’t hear , and Dix became injured and confined to a sanitarium .
At first , we remember Dix is actually utter , until Gordon and Bullock go to visit him — and Dix shock Gordon by describing the Bullock he used to know , rather than the Bullock that Gordon knows now . That ’s a really deft touch — as far as Dix knows , Bullock is still a liberal paladin , charging into action . He has no estimation that Bullock has become “ dreamy ” and corrupt . ( And meanwhile , Bullock is sending him porn . Heh . )

This instalment also shows us a more driven Bullock — he took down the Goat 10 years ago , and now somebody is back , committing the same crime with the same M.O. Including one detail that nobody except Bullock and Dix ( and the utter medical quizzer ) know about : a coin sewn inside the victim ’ heads . Bullock is haunted by the approximation that they catch the wrong guy , or he was n’t working alone , and winds up croak to strange distance to hitch the new guy .
Luckily , this time around , they not only arrest the new Goat reasonably speedily , but they ’re able to save his 2d dupe . And then Bullock , who ’s usually the “ declare triumph and go home ” form of guy , notices something : a strange twitch in the new Goat ’s bridge player , which is the same as the Church Father of one of the victims . Bullock see out that Dr. Marks , a hypnotherapist who caters to these flush families and also did pro bono work with both goat , is really behind the whole thing .
It ’s a loopy story , but it ’s very Gotham : both the somewhat outlandish criminal scheme , and the motivation having to do with hate of the metropolis ’s corruption and plutocracy .
And then … Bullock found out that Gordon lied to him about down Oswald Cobblepot , and nearly strangles his own partner . Speaking of which …
Oswald Cobblepot
Montoya and Allen witness a watcher who positively IDs Gordon as the murderer of Oswald Cobblepot :

And they get warrants for the catch of Gordon and Bullock , even though they do n’t in reality have a body . Gordon tries to differentiate everybody the the true , that he lied about kill Cobblepot , but nobody believe him — until Cobblepot himself shows up at the police station , in the absolute nick of clock time .
Why does Cobblepot risk his own neck to save Gordon ? ( And how does he cognize Gordon needs saving ? That ’s sort of the confusing part . ) Cobblepot is obscure out from Fish Mooney and Falcone , who opine he ’s dead — but he ’s also a crazy SOB who ’s already visited Gordon ’s flat and announced his true identity to Sal Maroni . He ’s not exactly know for his survival acquisition . And Oswald ’s wandering behavior makes him that much more riveting .
We get a clue to his wonky reasoning earlier in the episode , when Oswald visits his female parent — who ’s win over that Oswald has take up up with some hussy . alternatively , he slow manages to explicate to her that he fell in with some bad masses who hear to shoot down him . But then , Oswald found a real friend — a copper , who ’s not like the other cops . “ He ’ll aid me amount out right in the end , ” Oswald says . And apparently Oswald really trust in Jim Gordon and their lifelong wonderful friendly relationship , to the point where he ’s unforced to waltz into the police place and foretell himself . This ca n’t end well .
Gordon and Barbara
Jim Gordon ’s “ only true cop in Gotham ” routine gets escape from up quite a bit this week — he ’s in reality tardy to the crime scene , and Bullock get there before “ the boy scout . ” That ’s because Gordon is too meddling having another conflict with his girlfriend Barbara .
And luckily , Barbara is slightly more charitable this week than in previous weeks — she kind of understands , at last , that Gordon ca n’t narrate her everything about his problem , but she also knows that he ’s changed a passel . And she severalise him that she just want one-half of what he has to deport , not all of it . Which is sort of a cherubic moment .
And then Montoya make out to Barbara and enjoin her that it ’s not just that Gordon is corrupt and dirty , but what Gordon sleep together will actually drink down her :

Barbara stress to discourage Gordon that he ’s about to be arrested and they should get out of town , and this is the accelerator for Gordon let in that everything ’s been more complicated than he expect , and they ’ve tie his hands , and he ’s lose and so on . But he ca n’t run by with her . The Jim / Barbara scene are still the weak part of this installment , but at least we get to see Gordon showing a routine more exposure ( even before he gets nabbed ) and Barbara displaying a bit more linchpin and standing up for her man . It ’s something .
The good Bruce Wayne setting yet
Meanwhile , Bruce Wayne is not in this episode that much , and he ’s back in the one elbow room at Wayne Manor , after actually get out into the earth last week . But he does get one terrific scene :

Bruce saying he does n’t sleep with why the Goatman “ chose an ungulate for his totem ” is reasonably priceless — and then he hits us with the lamentable lilliputian finale . Why would the Goat take him , when there ’s nobody to take him from . The Goat only want to take mass who will be missed , and the only people who would really omit Bruce are dead . The look on Alfred ’s face is nuts .
after , Catgirl sneak into Wayne Manor and steal a atomic number 47 box out from under a sleeping Bruce ’s nose — she ’s still spy on Bruce , but she has n’t approached him to recite him what she escort in Crime Alley yet , because this show has n’t get hold of midseason yet . She also get a good look at Bruce ’s crime wall .
And … the Riddler
Another proto - Bat - baddie get a scrap of an upgrade this week . He ’s still lurking around law-breaking scenes and trying to get Bullock to answer his riddles . But Edward Nygma also has a weird subplot where he ’s kind of stalking the nerdy daughter who work in the filing way , Kristin Kryngle , and making inappropriate remarks about her name . It ’s almost endearing , except that it ’s really creepy and mess up — author Ben Edlund do to show how this might seem odorous or romantic in Nygma ’s messed - up brain , but it ’s just … not .
And then there ’s the insane conniption where Nygma has reorganized Kryngle ’s filing cabinet , and he continue saying the unexampled system will be “ rhizomatic ” and “ lateral ” and “ like peat moss . ” And he does this intensely creeptastic thing with his fingers as he repeat the word “ laterally ” over and over . This needs to be a GIF .
All in all , this was a terrific episode for Bullock , laying the groundwork for him to become a good copper again by showing that he was a good cop once . And it was a somewhat salutary episode for everybody else . On a show that still has too many Batman characters waiting for the Caped Crusader , this put most of them to pretty good exercise .
