Last Saturday at South by Southwest , DC Comics concord a panel that gathered strip writer and creators together to celebrate 80 years of Superman . Also on the dialog box were writers for Krypton , include executive producer and showrunner Cameron Welsh ( Constantine ) . The show is the unexampled DC Comics TV adaptation , but Welsh and other Godhead have made clear that Krypton happens within its own bespoke continuity , away from Black Lightning and the show of CW ’s Arrowverse . Cameron Welsh : Part of the challenge is for citizenry to accept the melodic theme that it ’s not a one - off . It ’s not just a prequel . This is n’t just kind of like , tread water until the major planet explodes . That ’s what the time change of location element gives us . Once we insert that , we can lean into the idea that the timeline can change . story changes . So now , the stake of the show have been pack , for present - day Earth as well as ancient Krypton . Hopefully , that addresses that gainsay in condition of making the audience invest in what ’s encounter .

io9 : We have view the idea of castes and factions within Kryptonian society kill up over the decades in the strip . One of the thing I really liked was the ecosystem of guilds when Geoff Johns was write them . So , what kind of stuff and nonsense are you guys executing in that vena ?
Welsh : We definitely wreak with that . There are six main guilds in Kandor City . So , if you ’re a member of the social club , you leave a life of privilege and you live in the upper echelon of companionship . Like , literally . These gargantuan tower in these canyon at the top of the arena are where the order live . And if you ’re not a fellow member of the guild , you ’re deemed rankless . You have no rank , or place in beau monde . You ’re basically cast down to the bottom and you live , effectively , in the cellar . It ’s kind of like the slum , in a way . It ’s a very sharp divide and we research the role of class in society , and classism , and how that exists .
We also bet around with scientific discipline and religion . The science club and the religious lodge are two of the main guilds , along with lawmaker and artisan and the travail guild . The metropolis of Kandor is a theocracy , so it ’s a spiritual figure known as the Voice of Rao who is the psyche of land . All other religions have been banned . Because it ’s a theocracy , one of the thought in the show is that , at this stage , nobody on Krypton is aware of the existence of other alien life . They guess that they ’re alone in the universe . Our paladin , the House of El , challenge the assumption , and that ’s consider unorthodoxy .
The Voice of Rao say that their god — Rao , the sun god — created all life and Krypton is the totality of his creation . So , to speak of anything outside of that is considered heresy . Her follower are called Cythonnites and the following of Rao are call Raoists . But that ’s an outlawed organized religion , so anyone who exercise it has to do it underground .
io9 : You tell that Kandor is the independent setting for the show , which fans know as the Kryptonan metropolis which gets shrunk and held captive by Brainiac . Are you by design playing off that ? You could go either way of life : defy expected value , or carry through it …
Welshman : No doubt . That ’s exactly what we tried to do . There ’s so much mythology for Krypton that ’s change [ for the show ] But I think even most effortless fans know is that Kandor was a city that was bottle and submit by Brainiac . set up it in Kandor and ingest Brainiac as our main giving bad for the first season — the melodic theme there was to set up the jeopardy that we act around with . We ’re putting a spin on the expected value of what that stand for , and we go against that in some room .
io9 : WhenGeoff Johns talked aboutKryptonat San Diego Comic - Con last year , I remember him cite something about a Thanagarian Hawkwoman . Is that still in play ?
Welsh : It is , but we ’re expect at that more for time of year two . You know , we had written that in at a sure point , but we kind of finger like — to be good — we had a lot on our plate already . We had a lot of fiber to serve and we really just want to do the correct thing . We did n’t want to spread ourselves too thin . So I think , “ Better to hold it off and do it properly than attempt to cram it all in . ”
io9 : Adam Strange is one of the most long - live space - themed characters in the DC Comics pantheon . In the show , he travels back in time and to tell the main persona , Seg - El , thathis grandson who produce up to be Superman . Welsh : I think we ’ll understand what drive the Zods . The Zods are just as big a part of the show as the Els , really . We go into flashback in episode five and we ’ll see why they ’re so honour - bound , why they have pledge themselves to be the protectors of the Krypton , and the cost of that . Even within the military guild , they ’re almost a step above the other warriors , just in their dedication to their project and the sacrifices that come with that . And then , we take exception that . We expend a lot of the first half of the season talk about what it means to be a Zod , and what it be them to be a Zod , and then we sort of switch that on its forefront by saying , “ What if you had to go against those beliefs ? ” for any identification number of reasons . So you know , that ’s really fun to encounter with .
io9 : I saw the video where you and David Goyer were babble about the show , and it looked like you guys hired citizenry to make Kryptonian food for the fictitious character to exhaust . What was that like ?
Cymry : Oh humanity , I did n’t eat up it . But I see it . It was this big lizard thing and this fille in the panorama just had to keep eat it . Like , take after take — every dissimilar set - up we had to do . And she ’s like this tiny little little girl . And you just see the cheeks bulge as she ’s trying to stuff her face . I do n’t recognise what they made it out of , but it was in the bod of some kind of a weird lounge lizard - case of animate being .
And there ’s another here and now where — I think they ’re called H’rakas — they’re a creature that exist on Krypton … peradventure they ’re the unity Russell Crowe was flying around on ? At one period , I call up Adam Strange is in the market looking for something , so someone provide him a H’rakan egg pouch .. .and he pick it up and it ’s just this viscous kind of slimy glob of a thing . So , it ’s fun . All of that stuff is really fun .
io9 : Cameron Cuffe plays Seg - El , and he ’s a Brobdingnagian comic - book devotee . What do you get out of having a guy like that be the lead of the show ?
Welsh : His knowledge is Brobdingnagian . We ’ve had him in the author ’s room and he and I have speak about where we ’re survive . He has lots of dandy ideas . His instincts for the character are always daub - on . He understands not just his character ’s place within it all , but how this show fits in the mythology . He really know , tonally , what ’s right for the character , what are the kind of values Superman represents , and what he mean to the whole mythology . He ’s just an unbelievable resource in that way . And we both get to geek out over the same things . He ’s unlike any lead — he ’s more like a mate .
