There I was , mind my own business , calmly enjoying my fresh standing desk , when the room erupted . Baffled , I looked up to becharm a twinge of fierceness in their eye just as this pack of hyenas I call my “ team ” lashed out .
“ I ’m gon na kick it one day , ” one of my Gizmodo coworkers , Alex , shouted from across the room . Thus began what would grow into months of unappeasable ridicule over a simple piece of music of ergonomic authority furniture .
In my individual pursuit not for the perfect standing desk , but for the most practical one for me — a human being — I confront mockery beyond my wildest dreams from fellow Gizmodo colleagues who assault me after I purchased a totally fine standing desk made of composition board on Amazon .

I picked up the Ergodriven Spark—“the perfect way to assay a standing desk”—for one reasonableness above any other : price . Like a rare infract whale , I saw this $ 25 corrugate box zoom above a sea of overprice products I was n’t quick to commit to just yet , as I follow up on my quest for modest strong-arm activity . Popular stand desks can be century if not chiliad of dollar ; my boxy alternative remain firm in great direct contrast .
“ No worries about who is foot up the bill or which fancy sport you might use , ” the chipperlanding pagefor the product reads . “ Just take hold of Spark and try standing at study . ”
“ Sure , ” I thought . It ’s not like I was drop a K . If I really bonk it , maybe I ’d trade it in for something fancy one day . Something refined , electronic , and made of bamboo . That ’s what I really wanted , but deep down , I also question if any standing desk could make me feel better . To find this out for myself , I finally plowed forward , choose my size ( “ Medium ” ) , and added the Spark to my cart .

What the company ( and reexamination siteWirecutter ) give way to warn me about , however , was how enrage this uncomplicated twist would leave many of my coworkers .
“ I like I could open a windowpane so I could throw it out , ” saidour surrogate editor in chief , to rowdy laugh . A older writerchimed in : “ I ca n’t think of a cheaper product to purchase that would make more people unhappy . I think in that way it is passing effective . ”
I ’d purchased this boxwood to prop up my laptop computer in February but did n’t get around to assembling the Spark until a week or so afterwards . As I began to put it together , colleagues pucker around me , sniffing at it , prodding it with their claws , intrigued by the newcomer in our blank space . Its shape began to slowly take contour — it took me nearly an 60 minutes to assemble the dang thing — and a dizziness swelled up inside me . I was n’t just ready to stand . I was eager to show off my cleverness that was so apparent in this purchase . I enjoyed the ridiculousness of it , too . Some of my coworkers , however , met the desk like an unwished distraction . Others search on in amused unbelief . Once the real work began , the standing , everyone seemed to more or less move on .

There I was , alone with my desk , sealed I ’d make it work .
By March , mere weeks after I ’d given the desk a actual go , my teammate ’ indifference sprain to mental rejection . Then intuition . And finally ungoverned furor . They would n’t stop talking about it . Like they were obsess with me or something !
“ Do you actually want a real standing desk now ? Did you do that question ? ” Marina , Gizmodo ’s feature editor , probed , as though I was standing on trial instead of at my nice cardboard standing desk . “ What do you require more , a standing desk or the respectfulness of your coworkers?”an onlookeradded .

The wave of unsolicited attacks stung . But let me tell you , dear proofreader , the trueness hurt worse — like a corner pinnace to composition board dreams .
The world is , I kind of failed to properly use my standing desk . I go by spending half my solar day standing , half sitting , on modal . As the days fatigue on , however , my leg grew aweary . finally , I spent maybe 15 minutes a day actually standing . The rest of the time , I sat slouched in my electric chair , the Spark cram up against my varan , which went idle , my laptop hanging precariously off the edge of my overcrowded “ real ” desk , as I sway on typing . This only renewed the fury in my hellish coworkers .
“ It make mass uncomfortable , ” a coworker chime in , “ and then it ’s funnier because you ’ve been annul it for , like , two weeks . ”

Once the attacks picked up again , I get up instinctively to meet them — by using the standing desk more , this meter to molest them .
As I withstood the attacks , I considered why my team was so interested with my personal affairs . Perhaps my coworkers were pull up for me to accomplish my goals and think toughened love was the only way of life to go — the honest formula for success ? Or perhaps it was the Spark desk ’s appearance ? improbable . It ’s absolutely adorable .
Barring those hypothesis , I take yet another option desirable of examining .

Jealousy .
Of of course . It all made good sense . The team , caught off safety by my brilliant purchase , lash back on instinct . As they came to their senses , however , it was too late . So they ratchet down up the attacks and dug their own graves . Last Friday , all this desk fuckery reached a pyrexia pitch :
Ultimately , the initial source of my coworkers ’ rage does n’t seem to have been the Spark , per se , but sustain standing itself . Unreasonable as they may be most of the fourth dimension , I can see where they ’re issue forth from : There I was , constantly towering over my seated coworkers , an elevated “ pest ” in the recess of their eye . Once I abandoned the standing part of my standing desk , though , the tiff proceed — why cramp your workspace with a standing desk if you ’re not going to actually suffer ? Between the blazing standing and the absurdity of not standing , my coworkers simply could n’t address it .

I could say now that these attacks drove me to quit the Spark standing desk , but truthfully , I ’d already given up on it . Unlike the adjustable standing desk that have filter into our business office , this one was for good just , take up a good bit of blank , and really only offered enough support for a laptop computer and my heavy - handed typing — allow alone a monitor and keyboard .
My dedication to the spark was at last as brittle as its composition board husk , and so I stashed it under my desk to gather dust . I have not only given up on my standing desk dreams , but the urgency to utilize one has settled back down to a oecumenical curio . I will stand again , but for now , I ’m comfortable enough sitting .
As for my coworkers , I ca n’t help but wonder : Was this ever really about the standing desk ? Or was it about something else ? Heaven veto someone with FEELINGS walks into this office with a cardboard desk in tow !
