And now , MoMA has add together a classic from that bygone era to its lasting collection : The cover of the Rolling Stones ’ Let It run , designed byRobert Brownjohn .
The iconic cover shows a wacky patty with layers made of a tyre , a clock face , a film canister , and a pizza pie , clad in white frosting pepper with confect orbs . Richards hired Brownjohn , a close friend , to plan the cover of the album , which was originally supposed to be called Automatic Changer . In spite of the name change , the Stones stuck with Brownjohn ’s design because they liked it so much . And more than 40 years afterwards , MoMA agree :
Brownjohnwas hired by his secretive pal Keith Richards to plan the top , and he in turn hiredDelia Smith — the same Delia Smith who would go on to become a well - cognise British cookery book writer and television celebrity — to bake the cake . As quoted in bassist Bill Wyman ’s memoir , Rolling with the Stones , Smith recall , ” I was working then as a jobbing home economic expert with a intellectual nourishment photographer who shot for commercial and magazine . I ’d make anything they require . One day they allege they wanted a cake for a Rolling Stones record cover , it was just another job at the time .
