Mario and Luigi were a big hit at the box office!
In September 2021, Illumination andNintendo Co. announced the film’s all-star cast— which includesChris Prattas Mario,Anya Taylor-Joyas Princess Peach andCharlie Dayas Luigi — during a Nintendo Direct event.
In June 2022, Pratt spoke about his performance in an interview withVariety. TheJurassic Worldalum said he “worked really closely with the directors” to craft the perfect Mario voice, adding, “[We tried] out a few things and landed on something that I’m really proud of.”
During a January 2022appearance onJimmy Kimmel Live!, Day stayed tight-lipped about the project. “I’m playing Luigi. In fact, I was just recording that this morning and I’d love to tell you all about it but they’re top secret about this stuff,” he told hostJimmy Kimmel. “This is serious stuff! These are Nintendos people.”
When Kimmel asked him if he had read the script for the film, Day explained, “I know nothing, I show up and they say: ‘You say this, and you say that.’ " Still, he added that, from what he could gather, the movie was “very funny.”

TheOctober 2022 trailergave fans an important look into the film, though the plot ofThe Super Mario Bros. Movieis still unclear. According to the trailer, at least some of the conflict will center around Bowser, who can be seen leading his army against the nation of penguins from “Super Mario 64.” Meanwhile, Mario is in the Mushroom Kingdom, teaming up with a new friend, Toad.
When thesecond trailerwas released on Nov. 29, 2022, some of the plot became clear. For one thing, it seems a weapon-wielding Princess Peach will play a large role in fighting the villain. “Bowser is coming,” she says. “Together, we are going to stop that monster.”
It’s also clear from the video that the story has high stakes. “There’s a huge universe out there,” Princess Peach tells Mario. “With a lot of galaxies. They’re all counting on us.”

In September 2021, original Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto announced the all-star cast, which includes Pratt, Taylor-Joy, Day,Jack Blackas Bowser,Keegan-Michael Keyas Toad,Seth Rogenas Donkey Kong,Fred Armisenas Cranky Kong,Kevin Michael Richardsonas Kamek andSebastian Maniscalcoas Spike.
During the presentation, he also said that Charles Martinet, who has voiced Mario and Luigi in the video game since the 1990s, will be “appearing in surprise cameos.”
Pratt turned out to be a controversial casting choice, with manyMariofans expressing concern online. Even John Leguizamo, who played Mario’s brother Luigi in the 1993 live-action film adaptation, spoke out about the “unfortunate"decision to cast Prattduring an interview with IndieWire on Nov. 15, 2022. “The directors Annabel Jankel and Rocky Morton fought really hard for me to be the lead because I was a Latin man, and [the studio] didn’t want me to be the lead. They fought really hard, and it was such a breakthrough,“he said. “For them to go backwards and not cast another [actor of color] kind of sucks.”

The video included Mario entering a cheering arena to battle Donkey Kong and Mario and the gang racing across Rainbow Bridge. This trailer also marked the first appearance of both Luigi and Princess Peach.
